Charles R. Wetzig

December 10, 1939 — February 15, 2013

Charles (Chuck) R. Wetzig, 73 of Abilene, went home to be with his savior on Friday, February 15, 2013. A funeral service honoring his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Piersall Benton Chapel, 733 Butternut St. with a burial in the Buffalo Gap cemetery to follow. A visitation with the family will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Chuck was born December 10, 1939 in California, MO to Albert and Pearl Wetzig. He attended school for his first eight years in a one room school house and went on to high school in California and Lexington, MO. In 1961 Chuck moved to Abilene, TX. While in Abilene Chuck owned and operated ABC Pest Control for nearly 40 years. He loved his work but more than anything he enjoyed the friendships he created throughout the years through his business. He truly loved to visit with people and never met a stranger.

Much of Chuck’s spare time was spent in the outdoors but especially on a horse. He was a proud member of the Taylor County Sheriff’s Posse and carried the flag of the Posse in many parades through the years. Chuck had a favorite and faithful horse “Hollywood” that he trained to do his commands whether he was competing in barrel racing, Pony Express or taking long trail rides. “Ole Hollywood” as Chuck called him had a big and powerful heart and was a huge part of Chuck’s life. In 1971, Chuck was proud to ride with the Sheriffs Posse at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL, as part of the grand entry where the Dallas Cowboys played the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl V.

Preceding Chuck in death were his parents; two brothers Les and Paul; niece Debbie Kay; and a sister-in-law, Leona Wetzig. Surviving Chuck are his two sisters, Clara Francis of Abilene and Ruby Kay of Centertown, MO; two nephews and their spouses, Roger and Paula Kay, Terry and Debbie Wetzig; and a niece and her husband, Joyce and Jimmy Doyle; as well as special friend that was like a son to him, Keith Ekberg, and wife, Shannon; and many other great nieces and nephews and extended family members and close friends.
