Larry Holmes, 77 of Abilene, passed away Tuesday December 18, 2012 at Hendrick Medical Center. A service is scheduled for 11:00 am Friday December 21, 2012 at Highland Church of Christ. Visitation with the family will be held Thursday evening from 5-7 pm at Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.
Mr. Holmes was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 9, 1935 to Malcolm and Louise Huffman Holmes. He moved to Abilene in 1968 to be the Minister of Education at Highland Church of Christ. Larry was very involved in the community, serving as president of several organizations including the Big Country Aids Resources, Western Little League, Kiwanis and the Abilene Association of Realtors. He was also a top real estate sales person for Dalzell Realtors for almost thirty years, focusing on commercial real estate. He was active in many church ministries including twelve-step programs, driving the special needs bus, and the widow/widowers ministry.
He is survived by his wife, Martha, five sons and one daughter; Matt Holmes, Mark Holmes (Gloria), Tim Holmes (Jon-Eric Garza), Andy Holmes (Wendy), Jamie Holmes (Connie) and his daughter, Libby Poor (Rob), his sister, Ada Person and brother, Ric Holmes, both of Memphis, Tennessee. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; Jeremy Holmes (Hannah), Tony Holmes, Lisa Young (Dusty), Shelton Holmes (Abby), Andrew and Avy Holmes, Zeke, Micah and Noah Holmes, Marcus, Kacie and Jackson Taylor, as well as four great-grandchildren, many other extended family members and close friends.
