Doris Jean Harrelson Allen passed away on January 17th, 2008 at Abilene Regional Hospital after a brief bout with double pneumonia. A funeral service will be held Monday, January 21, at 11 AM at Potosi Baptist Church with Bro. Donny Harbers and Bro. Jim McCurley officiating. Burial will follow at Nimrod Cemetery in Nimrod, TX at 3:00 PM, directed by Piersall Benton Funeral Directors. A visitation will be held at the funeral home, 733 Butternut St., Sunday from 5:00-6:30 PM.
Jean was born on July 17, 1926 to Herman Harrelson and Lucille Stanaford Harrelson. She attended schools at Nimrod, Scranton and Cisco, graduating from Cisco High School in 1944. She married Chester L. “Chet” Allen, Jr. on October 11, 1948 at her parent’s home in Cisco.
Chet and Jean lived in Buckeye and Hobbs, NM, Frankel City, Midkiff, Goldsmith and Odessa, TX. They lived in Odessa twice for a total of 25 years. While in Odessa she was employed by Ector High School as a bookkeeper-clerk and switchboard operator. She taught many students how to operate a switchboard until she was forced to retire due to chronic asthma in 1977. In 1985 they moved to the Denton Valley area where they grew pecans and enjoyed retirement.
Jean is survived by her husband, Chester L. “Chet” Allen, Jr. of Denton Valley, a daughter Lynda and husband Jeff Singletary of Houston, a son Randy and wife Susan Allen of Taylor, MS and three grandchildren, Shea Whetsell of Little Elm, TX, Justin Allen of Taylor, MS, and Shayne Higdon of Fort Worth, TX. She is also survived by 2 sisters and husbands, Melba Ray and Dann Barger of Brownwood and Lavonne and Ben Jaramillo of Abilene, 4 nephews and many cousins and family and friends who loved her very much. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was a member of the Baptist Church since her conversion at age 12. She was a very loving and outgoing person with only one prejudice, Ignorance.
