Flossie Faye Radcliff Osborn peacefully passed away on Wednesday December 5th, surrounded by her family who loved her deeply. She leaves behind many, many friends in Abilene and the Big Country. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 8th at the University Church of Christ with Dr. Eddie Sharp presiding. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday December 7th at Piersall Benton Funeral Home 733 Butternut St.
Flossie was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Lillie Radcliff; two brothers, Charles Warren and Leon Travis; a son, B. Moses Osborn; a grandson, Jayson Edward Sharp; and an adopted daughter Patricia Huisenga.
Born into a pioneering and ranching family who homesteaded in Elida, New Mexico, Flossie attended high school in Dora, New Mexico. Hard times, hard work and a mental toughness combined to develop her into the self-assured and capable woman everyone has known her to be.
Flossie moved to Lubbock to attend Draughn’s Business College, and while there she met and married Calvin Osborn who was stationed at Reese Air Force Base. Their tours of duty included Chicopee, Massachusetts; Aurora, Colorado and Abilene, where they have continued to live.
Anyone who knew Flossie was aware of her generous and compassionate spirit. Christmas was her favorite time of year because she delighted in giving gifts. Her garage turned into a gift store complete with a wrapping department during the holiday season.
Flossie’s family has a long lineage in the Church of Christ. Her Aunt Mary Green was a charter member of Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock. A member of the University Church of Christ for forty-seven years, Flossie was instrumental in beginning the Hispanic church there. She and Calvin also assisted in the establishment of the Springfield, Massachusetts church and the Baker Heights Church of Christ in Abilene.
Flossie was the general manager of Fashion Lane dress shop for many years. Following that she managed American Mud and Grand Mud Companies. After she retired, she helped out in the office of Jack Grimm.
As a member of the Abilene Petroleum Club, Flossie ate there almost daily for twenty years. She then became a fixture at the Abilene Country Club where she enjoyed keeping company with old friends and meeting new ones. She was secretary-treasurer of the Abilene Desk and Derrick Club. One of her proudest moments was being named an honorary member of Ko Jo Kai women’s social club at Abilene Christian University. She is one of only three women with that distinction. Her home was opened to club members on many occasions.
Flossie is survived by her husband Calvin; a son, Derrill Osborn of Dallas; a daughter and son-in law, Karen and Dr. Joe M. Sharp; a grandson, Stephen Sharp, and a long-time family friend Dr. Don McCollum. Pallbearers will be Mark John Eberhardt, John Jiminez, Dr. Don McCollum, Derrill Osborn, Stephen Sharp, Michael Sharp and Dr. Joe M. Sharp.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Jody Crumbliss and staff, especially Cindy Eberhardt; the nurses at Big Country Hospice and Hendrick Hospice; Gracie Gill; Shelly Gill; Mark John Eberhardt, Flossie’s traveling buddy; Sharon Kelley, a long-time friend; and the caring nurses on the 5th floor of Abilene Regional Hospital. They have been a blessing to our family.
Donations in Flossies memory may be made to the Jayson E. Sharp Memorial Scholarship at Abilene Christian Schools, 2550 N. Judge Ely Blvd, Abilene, Texas 79601 or to your favorite charity. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.pbfuneraldirectors.com.
