William G. ‘Big Granddad’ McClellan

William G. ‘Big Granddad’ McClellan, 88, passed away Tuesday November 20, 2007 at Coronado Nursing Center in Abilene. Graveside Services and interment will be at the I.O.O.F Cemetery in Denton at 1:30 pm on Friday officiated by Rev. Lisa Marshall. Arrangements are under the direction of Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.

William was born on July 12, 1919 to John Thomas McClellan and Mattie Belle (Gober) McClellan in Sanger, TX. He spent his childhood and attended school in Sanger and later graduated from North Texas State with a Masters degree in biology. He married Ruby L Smith in Oklahoma in 1942, and later that year was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Europe 1944-45. William worked as a fishery biologist for the state of Texas, and later served as a Veterans Affairs officer in Palo Pinto County. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Denton and he also belonged to the Knights of Pythius. One of his favorite hobbies was wood working. William moved to Abilene in 1989 to be close to family.

William is preceded in death by his wife Ruby L McClellan. He is survived by his son Mike McClellan and wife Sharron of Abilene; daughters Mary McClellan of Oklahoma; and Margaret Ernest and husband Robert Ernest of Red Bank, TX; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
