Liam Gray Lowe, age seven years and four days, lost his valiant fight with leukemia on January 17, 2012. He was at home with his family. A celebration of his life will be held at the Highland Church of Christ on Saturday, January 28 at 11:00 am. A private family burial was held January 20, 2012 at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery. The arrangements are being handled by Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.
Liam was born on January 13, 2005 to Matthew and Amy Lowe in Abilene. He enjoyed riding his scooter and swimming. Liam attended Young Children’s World at Highland Church of Christ and Stepping Stones Preschool. In August 2010 Liam started kindergarten at Thomas Elementary. On November 12, 2010, Liam was diagnosed with leukemia at Cook Children’s Hospital in Ft. Worth. He received treatment there and at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
Rather than fixating on his own difficult situation, Liam chose to focus on helping other people. He and his dad set a goal to learn something, make something and love someone everyday. He learned a great deal about medical care and could often be found in his hospital room reading about dinosaurs or birds or skyscrapers on his iPad or in books from the hospital library. His small building and craft projects were regularly given as gifts to his nurses, grandparents or his sister, Mary.
As soon as Liam discovered there were children without enough food or clean water, he wanted to help. He and his mom sent many small gifts of chickens and goats to families on the other side of the world through available charities. But Liam wanted to help in a bigger way. He began fund-raising through the The Water Project with an initial goal of $13,500. That goal was achieved in less than two weeks and two wells were built, providing clean water to a hospital and a school in Kenya. The current amount raised is more than $32,000.
During his final weeks at home, Liam continued to think of others and to send gifts to those who had needs. He drew many pictures for family members and friends that represented special times he had spent with them. His favorite activity was playing a game of Apples to Apples Jr. with family members. In his short life, Liam set an excellent example of how to live in the world with love and creativity.
Liam is survived by his dad and mom, Matthew and Amy, and younger sister Mary. He is also survived by his Grandparents, Gary and Sandy Lowe of Abilene, and Rodwin and Nancy Fuller of Frisco and his aunt Abby Lowe McNeil and her husband Kevin McNeil of Coppell, Texas. Liam will be remembered by many, many other family members as well as numerous friends and those who learned of his efforts to live a life of love.
Donations may be made in honor of Liam to The Water Project at thewaterproject.org/liam or World Vision at www.worldvision.org. Condolences may be sent to the family at pbfuneraldirectors.com.
