Maxine Mccaleb Hill

March 26, 1917 — July 10, 2011

Maxine Hill, age 94, passed away in Sugar Land, TX on Sunday, July 10, 2011 after suffering a stroke a week before. Maxine was the daughter of Cleburne and Eula McCaleb. She and her twin sister, Gerry Shultz, were born on March 26, 1917 in Idabel, Oklahoma. She had two younger sisters, D’Nola Holding and Robbe Baldwin. Maxine was a 1938 graduate of Abilene Christian College (now University). She was united in marriage on November 5, 1938 to Landon Hill in Cordell, Oklahoma.

After her 5 children were reared she became a teacher in Abilene Public Schools teaching underprivileged, elementary-aged children reading for 25 years, from age 50 to 75. Mrs. Hill was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and a long time member of the Church of Christ.

Her husband, Landon, preceded her in death in 1974. She also lost her twin sister, Gerry, in August of 2010 and her younger sister D’Nola in January 2011. The three of them lived together for the last year of their lives.

She is remembered lovingly by her youngest sister, Robbe Baldwin, her 5 children and their spouses: Judy and Don Avera of Missouri City, TX, Jill and Marion Giesecke of Kerrville, TX, Jick and Judie Hill of Abilene, TX, Jana and Rick Rizzuto of Sugar Land, TX, and Jeff Hill, also of Sugar Land, her 12 grandchildren: Derek and David Avera, Guy and Greg Giesecke, Jendi Haug, Jacy Hooten, Laura Weisman, Melissa Miles, Jenny Rizzuto, Rebecca Hill, David Hill, and Sarah Young, also by her 21 great-grandchildren, 5 nieces and nephews and a host of very special friends.

Visitation for Maxine Hill will be Friday, July 15, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. at Piersall-Benton Funeral Home, 733 Butternut, Abilene, TX. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the University Church of Christ, 733 E. N. 16th Street, Abilene, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds may be sent to Lifeline Chaplaincy, 1415 Southmore Blvd., Houston, TX 77004.
