Imogene was born September 2, 1914, near Crews in Runnels County, Texas, the
third daughter of Charles William Schwartz and Mary Borders Schwartz. Her
mother died when she was 4 years old, and 3 years later her father married Ruby
Bird Cox. Imogene grew up on a farm, and worked in the fields and in the home. She attended ACC (ACU) in Abilene (1931 – 1934), and then taught in a one-room school, Dale #2. Imogene married Leslie Mickey on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1935. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters; their 2nd son died at the age of 2.
Imogene’s husband, Leslie Mickey, was a minister in Churches of Christ, and they lived in many Texas towns, such as Lockhart, El Paso, Vernon, Seymour, Colorado City, Levelland, Gainesville, O’Donnell, and Rio Vista. Her husband died in 1985 and Imogene moved to Abilene. She has been a member of the University Church of Christ since that time. She was always very active in the churches where she lived, teaching children’s classes, visiting the sick, and helping those in need. Imogene was a beautiful example of a Christian servant. One of her favorite things was working at the Christian Service Center, where she spent many hours each week. She continued to volunteer at CSC until after she was 95. Imogene was active in the Women of ACU for many years, and received their Woman of the Year award for ’88-’89. In 2001 Imogene received the Jefferson Award for her
community service. She will be remembered for her excellent cooking, including chocolate chip cookies and pecan pies. She will especially be remembered for her unselfish service and exemplary personal faith in Jesus Christ. Imogene lived at 1741 Smith Dr. many years, and moved to University Place in 2007.
Imogene was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Raymond and Halley Schwartz of Winters, 2 sisters, Aletha Belew and Cecil Adami, a son, Roy, and granddaughters Jennifer Graham and Camille Rhoads. She is survived by two daughters, Elaine Prothro (Clint) of Baytown, TX and Doris Graham (Pat), of Atlanta, GA; by two sons, David Mickey (Carolyn) of Abilene, and Charles Mickey (Kay) of Houston. Grandchildren include Cathy Ballew, Cindy Schoonmaker, Michelle Mickey, Melissa Denton, Jeff Green, Abigail Freiberger, Joy Moudy, Crystal O’Neal, Tiffany Taylor and Tami Mickey.
