Bennie Wendell Cox, 70 of Abilene, passed away Friday April 15th, 2011 at a local care center. A graveside service with military honors is scheduled for 11:00 am Monday April 18th, 2011 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene under the direction of Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.
Mr. Cox was born November 22, 1940 in Anson, Texas to Howard and Yvonna (Bartlett) Cox. Bennie graduated from Anson High School in 1959 where he was a four year letterman in football and a member of the "All-Time" football team. He was a great boxer and while competing in the golden gloves won 237 fights and only lost 3. When in college at Southwest Junior College Bennie was on the rodeo team and won several events.
In October of 1964 Bennie joined the Army and he faithfully served his country and earned the National Defense Service Medal. Bennie also worked as an officer in the prison system for many years. He retired in 2009 from the Robertson Correctional Facility.
Surviving Bennie are his brothers; Jack Cox and wife Delona of Roby, Ronnie Cox of Tuscola, and Travis Cox of Hawley, as well as a sister Peggy Kendrick and husband Doug of Howell, MI. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, extended family, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
