Gladys L. Wood

Gladys Leora (Townsend) Wood, a long time resident of Abilene, Texas, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011 in Houston, Texas. There will be a visitation with the family Monday, March 28th from 5-7 pm at Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St. The funeral service will be Tuesday March 29th 10am at the Piersall Benton Chapel.


Born in Eldorado, Arkansas on January 25, 1929, to Roy Edward and Emma Jewel Townsend, she moved to Hamby, Texas when she was just two years old. She attended Rock Hill School, graduated from Abilene High School, and attended Abilene Christian College until her marriage to Bill Wood in 1947. She and Bill were married for almost 27 years until his death in 1975. Gladys was also a long time employee of Grissom’s Department Store in Abilene, where she could always be found in the Ladies Ready to Wear Department. She attended Hillcrest Church of Christ for many years, but recently moved to the Houston area to be closer to family.



Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her sisters LaVern McWhorter and Margaret Latham. She is survived by her brother Leo E. Townsend of North Richland Hills, Texas, her daughter Carol (Kittie) Wood Stahl of Woodland, CA, her sons Bill Wood and wife Suzanne of Houston, and Tommy Wood and wife Cheryl of Bastrop, Texas. Also her grandchildren, Ginger (Stahl) Minney and husband Frank of California, Christopher and Cynthia Wood, and Lance and Suzette Wood, and two great grandchildren, Alyssa and Alex Minney. Gladys will also be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews.
