Charlie R. Gregory, 92 of Abilene, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2011 at a local medical center. A service is scheduled for 11:00 am Tuesday January 11th at the Piersall Benton Chapel, 733 Butternut St. with a reception to follow in the greatroom of the funeral home. A viewing will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 am before the service.
Charlie Gregory was born September 1, 1918 on Roxton Farm in North East Texas to Emerson and Hattie Gregory. He attended school in Roxton and after graduation went to work with the Civilian Conservation Corp. In 1938, Charlie joined the United States Navy which he served faithfully until 1946. He had a very distinguished military career, serving as a Chief Warrant Officer and was also a Pearl Harbor survivor.
After returning home Charlie began his college education at the University of Houston and while in Houston met the love of his life Mary Holloway who six month after meeting her became his wife. They married on December 29, 1946 in Novice, Texas. Charlie finished his education at Texas Christian University and began a career as a Petroleum Land Man. He truly enjoyed his time as a land man and became the first Petroleum Land Man in Texas to lease one million acres.
Charlie was a man of faith who believed in doing the very best he could at everything he set his mind to. He loved his family and was a devoted member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for over 38 years.
Surviving Charlie are his wife, a son Kyle Gregory and his wife Alice of Abilene, two grandson's Thomas Aaron and Charlie Stephens Gregory, a great grandson, Brackston Gregory and a nephew Glynn Gregory as well as a host of extended family members and close friends. Preceding him in death are his parents, a sister, Lura Gregory, and a brother Eddie Bill Gregory.
