Edward Marcus Brown, 95, formerly of Abilene, TX, passed away in an Arlington, TX care center on Saturday, July 15, 2017. A memorial service is schedule for 10:00 AM in the fellowship hall of the North Davis Church of Christ, 1601 North Davis Drive, Arlington, TX 76012 under the direction of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut, Abilene, TX. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday evening at Piersall Funeral Directors in Abilene, with burial at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.
Edward was born November 20, 1921 in Ladd, Oklahoma, to Richard Washington Brown and Mary McKinney Brown. He served in the Civil Service during most of World War II, but enlisted in the Army Air Force and served in the occupation force in Japan after the war.
After his discharge from the service, he enrolled in Abilene Christian College, earning a bachelors degree in Bible. He married the love of his life, Edna Ruth Williams in December 15, 1946, and they were together for almost 70 years. They spent five years as missionaries in Japan. Edward earned a masters degree in speech from ACC and his PhD in speech from the University of Oklahoma. He was on the faculty at Abilene Christian for 49 years, serving as Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1978 to 1982. Edward and Edna were long-time members of the University Church of Christ, where Edward served as an elder for 34 years, along with many other duties.
Surviving Edward is his daughter, Aleta Caraway; sons Marcus Brown and wife Carol, Byron Brown and wife Cindy, and Hiram Brown and wife Natasha; grand-children Alycia Brown Pendleton and husband Scott, Titus Brown, Noah Brown and wife Heather, Rozanne Caraway DeLoach and husband Brandon, Caleb Caraway and wife Jennifer, Barret Brown and wife Tiffany, Luke Brown and wife Megan, Gabrielle Brown, Ryan Brown and wife Ashley, Elaine Brown, Amber Brown Green and wife Katie; and nine great grandchildren with number ten due in the fall. He is also survived by many other extended family members and close friends. Preceding him in death were his wife Edna in November 2016, his parents, brother Edgar Brown, and sister Betty Percival. He was described by one associate as a man who “did justice, loved kindness and walked humbly with our God.”
