John Edward Comstock, 91 of Abilene, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016. He will be taken to Riverside National Veterans Cemetery to be laid next to his wife Mary, receive his Military honors and rest in peace along with his fellow Veterans that have served our country so well.
Born January 27, 1925 to Frank Comstock and Josie Mothershed in Delta Mississippi, John went on to lead a life that at the very last he said was "Not only long but good". He shied from calling it exceptional, but those who loved him best would beg to differ. Like all men of his time he was born to a hard life, but one he loved and made him who he was.
John had two brothers, Robert Comstock, who lives in Tennessee still to this day and George Comstock, who preceded him in death during the Vietnam War. Both brothers, like John, fought in World War II. He longed to join the war in his third year of high school, but Frank told him not until he had graduated. He spent his senior year chomping at the bit and the day that happened, John became a member of the 1st Marine division that fought on Okinawa, securing Kadena airfield and then moved on to several other war torn areas. He captured a prisoner on that island and after a hot meal and a cigarette, the man gave information that "turned the tide" for the troops there. His stories live on with his children and grandchildren today.
John lived most all of his adult life in California and, after the death of his wife Mary, moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, and then West Texas. John was preceded in death by his wife Mary Comstock, a young son, Charlie from a previous marriage and a grandson, Michael Hughes Johnson. He is survived by two daughters, Dolores Richards and Anita Dempsey, living in West Texas, and his two sons Larry and Mike Reynolds who reside in California; numerous grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren, along with too many cousins to count. We will all miss this man who in our eyes, yes...was a legend!
A special thanks to Wisteria Place Independent living and Skilled Nursing for being a part of his life with us.
