Graveside services were held on June 2, 2014 at Elmwood Memorial Cemetery for Oather C. Lewis, 92 of Abilene TX. He was born to Walter and Nannie Lewis on June 16, 1921 in Ira Texas. At the age of 21, he joined the United States Army, stationed in Juneau, Alaska. He served as Military Police until he received an honorable discharged on October 29, 1945.
After his discharge he trained and worked as a barber. He married Anna Faye Cain-Lewis, the love of his life, and had two daughters Kay Irene Lewis-Littles and Gwen Lewis-Davis. They lived in Raymondville Texas until they moved to Abilene in May 1963 where Oather opened and ran Lewis Barber Shop on North 12th. He also worked for Schkade Brother’s Drilling, working in the oil fields. He enjoyed his time at Schkade Brother’s because it gave him time out in the country and the wildlife. Hunting and fishing were his favorite past times, that he enjoyed with his friends and wife Anna Faye. Oather was also a proud 32nd degree Mason and part of the Shriners club. In 1990 Oather closed the doors to his barber shop and retired to enjoy an active life visiting the VFW and Senior Citizens.
Oather was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Everyone who knew him will have their own story to tell; as he was a man of many characters with colorful stories to tell. He commanded respect without a word and gave without ever being asked. His personality was large with a heart of gold. May he rest peacefully in heaven looking down upon us all with his watchful eyes. He will be missed.
Oather is survived by his daughters Kay Littles and Gwen Davis, grandchildren Tara Cheyenne Stone and Gary Dan Little. Five great- grandchildren Kyndal and Kassidy Stone and Sean, Caiden, and Colson Little. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, step-children and step-grandchildren.
Oather is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Richard, Herschall, and Stanley Lewis and one sister Doris Goldsmith, his first love Anna Faye Cain-Lewis and his Godsend LaWanda Thorton-Lewis, two son-in-laws Dan Davis and James Littles. In honor of Mr. Lewis, memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice or Rose Park Senior Citizens.
